9 Incredible Ways Having a Writing Routine Shapes Your Personality

Updated: Aug 19, 2021

Building a writing practice is a great way to get to know yourself and shape your overall personality. There are so many benefits associated with writing regularly. Today, I'm going to speak about my 9 important learnings from building writing practice.

I have been writing on this blog for nearly 8 months and I have been enjoying taking this time out each week to come up with a topic and add my thoughts to each topic. It has been a very fulfilling experience and I plan to keep it going for a long time. I hope you're enjoying these too. Do let me know your thoughts in the comments below

Let's get started with these 9 learnings.

1. Learn to Express Yourself

Writing opens the doorway to express yourself. With some practice, it feels like you're sharing your thoughts with a dear friend with no barriers whatsoever. You can be your own most authentic self.

And really connect with your inner thoughts and emotions. After having a great writing routine, you almost feel light, with the weight of your thoughts already on paper.

In a long run, you would also notice that your mental health gets better. There are much less over-thinking, fewer negative thoughts and reduced stress levels.

2. Build a Habit and Stay Disciplined

When you write regularly, it soon becomes a habit. It's an addictive habit, in a good way, of course. Talking for myself, it's one of those habits that I don't want to run away from.

Now if I don't write on a weekend, I feel like something is a miss. It is a great way to stay disciplined as well.

3. Explore Various Writing Fields

Writing is an in-demand skill. It is one of the most important modes of communication, since we are always consuming written content nowadays in the form of text messages, articles, emails, ebooks etc.

It can be improved with practice. If you hone the skill, you can also monetise it by giving freelance services to businesses that need them. You can write scripts for speakers, white papers, Podcast Scripts, Social Media Content. The list is endless really.

4. You Get to Understand Yourself Better

Building a writing practice gives you an opportunity to think of all the experiences that you have had and come up with topics that you can write about. It allows you to reflect on your thoughts and think ok this is something that I can talk about today.

You would be surprised as to how many topics you can talk about really. If you have meaning to start this practice, I urge you to take action now. You never know, you must be hoarding a treasure house of knowledge within you. Let it come through in your writing.

5. Lends You a Voice

Writing regularly allows you to find a voice. This is essential because this is what makes you unique. Your voice is a representation of your experiences and each individual has varied experiences.

Finding your voice may take some time to crack but you will eventually find it. You can keep improvising along your way.

6. Builds Your Confidence

This space is your playground. It gives you the freedom to be yourself. It gives you the medium to talk about the topics that you resonate most with and the areas that you care about.

This builds your confidence and I also think it results in your overall growth in personality.

7. Explore Your Creativity

There are many types of writing to explore. Long-form writing which includes blogs, case studies, articles and short-form writing includes social media posts, tweets etc. Each content type demands a unique style of writing.

You get to also experiment with different niches of writing such as lifestyle, technology, science, food. You can pick and choose as to what you enjoy writing the most. then continue writing on what you enjoy writing the most.

8. Storytelling

Humans connect with each other through stories. Any age group enjoys listening to stories. It's the best way to build a connection with fellow humans. If you're a great storyteller, you have a big advantage, my friend.

In today's times, most of the products are sold through stories. Stories that speak about transformation, inspiration or entertainment.

The practice of writing regularly combined with reading is a great way to improve this skill. I'm trying to build upon this skill too.

9. Makes you Life-Long Learner

Once you start writing, your hunger for learning skyrockets. You are curious about everything and want to keep learning as much as you can. Being a student for life is amazing as you stay humble and grounded because you now know that learning never ends.

It's a never-ending marathon of life and that's a great way to live life. Don't you think?

So there it is!
