7 Reasons You Should Watch Korean Dramas Right Now

Updated: Aug 19, 2021

The lockdown opened a new avenue of entertainment for me. Though I had a vague idea about it for a few years I never fell into it full throttle. This, my friends, is the world of Korean Drama. In my opinion, it’s a whole new world, that you would never know even existed until you actually fall into it. I think everyone should at least test these waters once before they make an opinion about it. Here are 7 reasons why you should right now.

1. Korean Oppas

Korean Oppas are the most amazing men out there. They are feisty, go-getters, hold their hearts on their sleeves, shy, sensitive and courageous men coupled with all the good looks. They are most ideal men which is what makes them swoon-worthy. You should definitely watch it to experience it. I bet you would have more than a few favourite Oppas by the end of it.

2. Wholesome Storyline

The K-drama storyline isn’t just about the two main characters. It has many sub-plots running parallel with the main plot and is so smoothly tied with the entire story that the end result is wholesome. It is not only about romance and intimacy but also about family values. The dramas also represent real issues in society like chauvinism at the workplace, abusive relationships, mental health, rare health conditions and versatility of professions. This representation is required in our times which makes the experience of watching the Kdrama relevant to most of us.

3. Realistic Characters

One of my favourite reasons for watching K-dramas is that each character in the story has a significant role to play and has a well-defined character sketch. Characters are not unnecessarily placed nor is the focus entirely on the lead actor and actress. Each person has a well-defined place in the story. It makes you connect with all the characters in the plot and makes the story a wholesome experience.

4. Cultural Influence

The Koreans value their culture more than anything. Wherever there is an opportunity, they showcase their culture with so much love and respect that people from other countries also have fallen in love with their culture. They don’t try to westernise anything to look cool but represent their own culture beautifully. The representation of the older Korean culture and the modern Korean world is something to watch out for.

They also have a lot of similarities with the Indian Culture like bowing to elders, living with parents even after they are adults, interfering aunties and relatives, family camaraderie. This makes me connect with the story a lot more.

5. Korean Food

No K-drama is complete without food. Food is an integral part of the dramas. They also showcase their specialities in their show. Ramyeon, Kimchi, tteokbokki, Kimbap, Bibimbap, fish cakes and Korean Fried Chicken are relished so well that I’m sure you would want to taste it as soon as possible. The love for fried eggs is unmatchable in Korean cuisine. Speaking for myself, Samyang Ramyeon of all types, kimchi and tteokbokki are part of regular grocery shopping lately.

6. Learning the Korean Language

The Korean language is incredibly beautiful to listen to. It has a lot of common words with the Tamil language like Appa - Father (Appa in Tamil), Eomma - Mom (Amma in Tamil), Anni - Sister-in-Law (Anni in Tamil), Va - Come (Va in Tamil). This is super fascinating.

The dramas unknowingly teach you the language which is always an added bonus. What could be a better way to learn a language than watching your favourite Oppas in Korean Dramas.

7. Skincare First, Makeup Second

There is a lot of attention given to skincare in Korean dramas with the actors promoting various skincare brands. The focus is also towards minimalistic makeup which seems realistic and wearable in real life. Because such dramas influence a lot of youth, it is great that they subtly promote skincare life.

I would like to hear from you. Have you watched a Kdrama yet? If so, how was your experience watching it? If not, I recommend you watch Crash Landing On You!

Or are you already a Kdrama fan? If so, I would love you to know what do you love most about Korean dramas?
