The year 2020 was a game-changer. It revolutionalised our previous notions of how a workplace runs, the standard way of schooling and learning new skills. All of a sudden, the students were forced to take classes from home, most of us started working from home effectively. We also started making time for hobbies by learning music, baking, exercising, dancing etc online.
The year changed our previous ways of operating as individuals and forced us all to live a new way of life. It made us beginners to this new way of living life!
I'm sure all of us took some time to adjust to this new life but now in 2021, we have all gotten used to this new way of living. When you were a beginner, you must have taken some time to analyse what is working out for you and how to make time for your hobbies and family.
How is pandemic related to this blog post? You might ask. That is because this was one of our recent experiences of being a beginner and all of us collectively experienced it. There are a number of perks to being a beginner. In this article, I will be talking about the perks of being a beginner. So, let's get started!
1. Beginners Mindset
As we grow older, we tend to develop the fear of beginnings. We might feel ashamed of starting out and fear judgement from others. We associate feelings of shame with being a beginner. But a very important mindset shift it to do it anyway.
Having a beginners mindset allows you to be open to starting from scratch, be teachable, ask questions and look for advice from experts. There are no barriers of age or gender.
I agree that getting started takes a lot of courage from you but soon you realise it was just the fear of starting out. The fear disappears once you have taken the first few steps.
2. High Enthusiasm
When starting out with learning any new skill, I experience the highest enthusiasm in its initial weeks or months. This is when I'm completely immersed in learning the skill. I would try to find various resources and hone them.
We must take full advantage of this phase before the enthusiasm dies down. The initial energy and enthusiasm can help us level up faster.
3. Makes you Humble and Curious
When you allow yourself to be a beginner, you let your guards down. You let go of your ego which makes you more humble. It lets you be more open to learning. You become a student all over again.
You are curious like a child and want to learn the most you can. Curiosity is a very important skill that you should never let go of and being a beginner allows you to be one.
4. You're a Better Teacher
Ali Abdaal speaks about this a lot where he says that you learn a lot more from a person who is a step or two ahead of you than from a person who is an 'expert'.
That is because their experience of learning the skill is fresh and are therefore able to teach you more effectively than somebody who has learnt the same skill a few years ago.
5. Helps Build Meaningful Connections
When you allow yourself to be a beginner, you also become more relatable to people who are just starting out or haven't even begun. You present a beginner picture to them.
This makes you more relatable and approachable to this audience and helps you build some great connections.
6. Smaller Audience, Less Pressure and More Experimentation
I will speak about this in the context of building a blog from scratch or a social media page. As a beginner, you're just starting out with building your audience. It gives your more time to experiment with different ideas and niches if you're not able to decide which is the one niche you love the most.
This is a no-pressure zone, so you can experiment to your heart's content. You will eventually understand what your audience is liking and what you enjoy creating the most.
As you continue experimenting, you will also be able to identify links between various skills you hone and make your own unique identity.
People also like to help beginners, they pay more attention and are willing to support you in your initial hiccups. If something is not working out for you, you can easily switch to something else.
7. Larger Creative Potential
Tying to the previous point, as a beginner, you also come with a fresh mindset. There are no barriers to your thought process. This helps you tap your creative potential than somebody who has been in it for a longer number of years.
I have also observed that the audience is more patient towards beginners. They pay more attention and are willing to support you in your initial hiccups.
I enjoy being a beginner. I like to call myself a multi-potentialite which means I end up discovering and learning new skills from time to time. If you're one too, you can check out my blog here.
How has your experience been with being a beginner? Do you enjoy being one? If you were scared all this while, I hope this blog helped you in some way. Do let me know your thoughts and I would have to read them.
I hope you're safe and well.
Until next week,
Hugs.
