5 Self-Care Habits you should start in 2021

Updated: Aug 19, 2021

Self-care is so important today more than ever. With so much content available at our disposal, it is easy to get into the loophole of comparison. But even with so much happening, it is important to keep our sanity and be appreciative and be grateful for what we already have and nurture it. Building a few self-care habits is a good way to start this journey. I have experimented with a few and I want to share these with you.

1. Journaling

Journaling could be one of the buzz words that we hear often lately but trust me it works. This is one self-care habit that you definitely give a try. Sitting down by yourself for a few minutes a day, opening a diary and jotting down anything and everything that is going on in your mind helps your brain dump and not let your brain ponder over it later. This could be done early in the morning or late at night whichever you prefer. Either way, it is one of the best ways to start your day or end your day.

You could also practice gratitude journaling wherein you list down all the things that you’re grateful for in your life. It could be a list of just 3 to 5 things are even more. This gives a great perspective on days when you feel particularly low. It gives you a chance to deeply think about what is it that you can still be grateful for even on your toughest days.

2. Digital Detox

With a new socials platform coming out every few weeks, it is more important than ever to know where to draw the line for content consumption. The algorithms are working hard to keep us glued to our screens.

Therefore, digital detox habits that suit your timeline could be a life-changer. A digital detox is where you set particular times during the day or a particular day in the week where you are off socials or any kind of screen activity.

If this is something that seems too intimidating to you, you could also start by setting timers to your socials and use them for only a particular time limit during your day. This will slowly help you build the habit and then you could go on to do it for days or few days though out the week.

What I have learnt is that we waste a lot of time on socials and when you start practising digital detox, you suddenly have a lot of time at your disposal. I would suggest you do give it a try and let me know how it has worked for you.

3. Reading Everyday

Reading every day can really change your life. You basically live a lot of lives with the fictional characters and gain a lot of perspectives if you’re into fiction books.

However, if you have already stepped into the world of non-fiction books, there is no dearth of knowledge. Imagine, an author puts so much thought and all his life’s learnings into one book. If you even read a few books a year, you have already gained all the knowledge that these authors have put in through their years of experience.

You could by setting a target of 10-15 pages a day or reading for just 15min a day and then go on increasing this as per your convenience.

4. Meditation

Meditation takes the front seat in building self-care habits. It is one of the best forms of self-awareness. There are different types of meditation focusing on mindfulness, mantra, spiritual etc. You could try these and figure what works best for you.

A few minutes of quiet each day for yourself can help you reap the benefits that last you a lifetime. If you haven’t already tried, I would say you definitely should.

5. Skin Care

Skincare is one of those habits that are easy to slip by if you don’t religiously follow it. But the benefits of regular skincare are immense. For starters, you could just do the basic CTM (Cleansing-Toning-Moisturising) steps and then as you understand your skin concerns, you could do a more elaborate one. Understanding your skin concerns and religiously following the habit does make a lot of difference to your skin.

These were 5 self-care habits that I follow and swear by. What are the steps to your self-care? I would be happy to know how to take care of you and would be happy to try out your recommendations. Please let me know in the comments section below.
